When Tohru Honda learns the Sohma family secret, her life changed forever! Her classmates, Yuki and Kyo, are both possessed by the zodiac creatures! Whenever they are touched by the opposite gender, they turn into animals! Tohru thinks this is a blessing at first, but later finds out it’s really a curse!
Fruits Basket (2001) is a wonderful anime about a young girl named Tohru Honda. She lived with her mom until her mother passed, so she moved in with her grandfather and other family members. When the house she lived in needs to be remodeled, her family went on vacation and invited her along. She politely declined, saying she has friends she’d stay with. But really, she didn’t ask her friends. She wanted to try living alone, so she set up a tent in the woods, with only bare necessities and a framed picture of her mom.
As she went on a walk, she came across a western-style Japanese home with its doors wide open. Walking in, she sees a small table with zodiac figures on it. But then… she discovered she was being watched! After turning around, she met a flirty guy named Shigure. After that, she sees Yuki, a classmate of hers! After formally greeting each other, they all started to talk. After some chatting, Tohru figured out the two actually were related! Eventually, they found out Tohru lived in a tent, (on THEIR property!) and invited her to stay with them! She politely accepted, and got her own special guest room!
While settling in, Yuki and Shigure came in to check on her. But before they could finish their conversation, an orange haired boy (named Kyo) came in and started yelling at Yuki! They got into a fight, and Tohru, trying to get them to stop, tripped and grabbed on to Kyo! They clashed to the floor, but instead of Kyo and Tohru on the floor… was Tohru, a lump of clothing, and an orange cat!
After that, Yuki turned into a rat, and Shigure- turned into a dog. Tohru was shocked and scared to death. When the doorbell rang, she ran to the door and said the iconic line, “They’re all animals!”
Later, she finds out that the three of them, and more members of the Sohma family, are being possessed by the zodiac! At first, Tohru thought this was cool. But when she found out the truth, she thought otherwise. When they get touched by the opposite gender, they turn into their animals! They could never be in love with anyone, meaning this was more of a curse than a blessing.
Tohru continued living with them, keeping their secrets and learning more as she got to know them better. She learned, laughed, and even cried in this amazing anime. It’s a must-watch for all fantasy/romance/comedy fans!
